Support networks
It’s important that the person or organisation you are nominating is able to support you in the way you are comfortable.
A supporter must promote your will and preferences, and personal, cultural, and social wellbeing. They must support you only to the extent necessary for you to make your own decisions and apply their best endeavours to maintain your ability to make your own decisions. You can choose to have multiple supporters if you want. Once registered, your supporters have duties under the Aged Care Act 2024 they must comply with.
If you have agreed to register a supporter but do not want them to be given automatic access to information that may or must be provided to you under the Aged Care Act 2024, they can be registered as a supporter lite (if they also agree to be registered as this type of supporter).
A supporter guardian is also a supporter and they can help you to make your own decisions. They are also an appointed decision maker for you and can make decisions on your behalf under a state or territory arrangement. If they are making a decision on your behalf, they must only do so in line with the state or territory arrangement/s for their appointment.
