Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia: What Everyone Needs to Know® 1st Edition, Kindle Edition
by Steven R. Sabat (Author) Format: Kindle Edition
4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars (35)
Part of: What Everyone Needs To Know? (158 books)
Alzheimer's is swiftly on the rise: it is estimated that every 67 seconds, someone develops the disease. For many, the words "Alzheimer's disease" or "dementia" immediately denote severe mental loss and, perhaps, madness. Indeed, the vast majority of media coverage of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other types of dementia focuses primarily on the losses experienced by people diagnosed and the terrible burden felt by care partners yearning for a "magic bullet" drug cure.
Providing an accessible, question-and-answer-format primer on what touches so many lives, and yet so few of us understand, Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia: What Everyone Needs to Know®contributes what is urgently missing from public knowledge: unsparing investigation of their causes and manifestations, and focus on the strengths possessed by people diagnosed. Steven R. Sabat mines a large body of research to convey the genetic and biological aspects of Alzheimer's disease, its clinical history, and, most significantly, to reveal the subjective experience of those with Alzheimer's or dementia. By clarifying the terms surrounding dementia and Alzheimer's, which are two distinct conditions, Sabat corrects dangerous misconceptions that plague our understanding of memory dysfunction and many other significant abilities that people with AD and dementia possess even in the moderate to severe stages. People diagnosed with AD retain awareness, thinking ability, and sense of self; crucially, Sabat demonstrates that there are ways to facilitate communication even when the person with AD has great difficulty finding the words he or she wants to use. From years spent exploring and observing the points of view and experiences of people diagnosed, Sabat strives to inform as well as to remind readers of the respect and empathy owed to those diagnosed and living with dementia.
Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia conveys this type of information and more, which, when applied by family and professional caregivers, will help improve the quality of life of those diagnosed as well as of those who provide support and care.

Product description
Review
"...accessible to a general audience, while also serving as useful reference and reminder for students and established dementia professionals... each chapter opens with important background content, and Dr. Sabat's writing flows smoothly and makes the reader feel that they are having a one-on-one conversation with the respected dementia scholar...Students and established practitioners will find this book an important reference resource, whether their background is specific to dementia or more broadly encompasses aging, family care, or medical and social care...many individuals with dementia, family members, practitioners, and the general public will benefit from access to this book. Dr. Sabat is applauded for addressing difficult questions with detailed but easy to follow answers... His use of clinical experience, real-life scenarios, and research citations is a model for future books in this style and addressing these topics." -- Dementia
"Professor Sabat's international renown as an expert in the field stems from his advocacy of a humane approach to people with different types of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. In this new book his views are presented with typical clarity. What he says can only be helpful both to people living with dementia and to their friends, families and professional carers. It's vintage Sabat: always look to the social environment; what's going on in the brain is never the end of the story! And he tells the story with remarkable sympathy and expertise."--Julian C Hughes, RICE Professor of Old Age Psychiatry, University of Bristol
"Steve Sabat's widely recognized and resonant voice has infused a transformative and compelling humanity into our personal and cultural narratives about people with dementia across the globe. His thought-provoking, compassionate, and instructive content throughout this new book is grounded in his core and profoundly important message--to never give up on the person by giving in to the diagnosis." - Lisa Snyder, MSW, LCSW, Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, University of California, San Diego
"It has helped me become more hopeful for a better future for all people with dementia, and I believe this book will help others find ways to live with dementia, as it informs those without dementia how to support us to do that. There is a gross and systemic underestimation of the capacity of people with dementia, even in the later stages of the disease. This book focuses on our capacity, and what we can still do to find meaning and purpose in our lives."- Kate Swaffer, Chair, CEO, & Co-founder, Dementia Alliance International
"Providing an accessible, question-and-answer format primer on what touches so many lives, and yet so few of us understand, Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia: What Everyone Needs to Know contributes what is urgently missing from public knowledge: unsparing investigation of their causes and manifestations, and focus on the strengths possess by people diagnosed...Sabat strives to inform as well as to remind readers of the respect and empathy owed to those diagnosed and living with dementia." - Care and Nursing Magazine
"There is much to satisfy students and professionals ... Family carers and those living with dementia will find much to identify in this book to help them make sense of what is happening to them and how to cope better ... the wisdom [this book] contains will be universally appealing to those who are serious about understanding how dementia affects the human condition and what we can all do to improve the quality of life of us all." - Journal of Dementia Care, Professor Dawn Brooker

5.0 out of 5 stars A great gift, something to treasureReviewed in the United States on 10 December 2023

Brick by brick, Dr. Sabat builds the reader’s knowledge of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and dementia. He poses many well-formulated questions, which he answers in a clear, concise way from his vast knowledge base. This makes us feel at home with him.
To be honest, his book felt like listening to an NPR interview. I imagine a densely populated urban population (city dwellers) all reading his book or listening to him describe what he knows of AD and dementia. I imagine a morning commute with people on the train or bus, on the road or on a flight all tuning in. And all benefiting from opening those pages of his with questions we didn’t know how to form.
I’d love to see Dr. Steven Sabat deliver a TED Talk on the subject of “Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia: What Everyone Needs to Know.” His book is very comprehensive and creative.
Dr. Sabat who lost a loved one at a young age due to brain damage from a stroke has devoted much of his adult life and career to studying neuropsychology. His work is his gift to the world. And I treasure it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Done - A Lifeline on Alzheimer'sReviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 October 2019
Format: PaperbackAmazon Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
I ordered this book because I work as a Clerk of the Court, dealing with the general public every day.
I am a 'Mental Health Champion' at my workplace and am looking to understand more about the health conditions that are prevalent in our society. Also, as with most people, I've seen a beloved relative die of dementia-related causes and doubtless, I'll be seeing more in the next 30 years or so.
This book impressed me for two major reasons: the author is a PhD in his subject but writes for the normal, intelligent reader as well as the professional market.
There are chapters with authoritative, up-to-date information on Alzheimer's Disease, The Biology, The Subjective Experience from a sufferer's point of view (carefully researched through personal contact with dozens of patients), The World of the Sufferer (socially); Resilience and the part it has to play (before and after diagnosis and for carers and families) and finally, The Place of Spirituality in this picture.
The general tone of the book is honest but did not leave me fearful and depressed as other works on this subject have done. The font is smallish but the white space and general layout of the book made it a comfortable read even for someone like me with a visual disability. The binding is sturdy as befits what amounts to a textbook or, for the lay reader, 'lifeline'.
Well done Steven R Sabat and Oxford University Press.

Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia: What Everyone Needs to Know® 1st Edition
The book.
This is a new book covering the latest research and advice to anyone needing it on Alzheimer’s.
Content.
The book is very well written with lots of useful advice for carers and families needing to know more. It is part a guide to the care of people and an explanation of the progressing of the disease. It is informative and sympathetic in its approach to this difficult condition.
Overall.
This book covers everything anyone will want to know about caring for someone with Alzheimer’s. For me it is the go to book on the disease. An excellent source of information and help with a disease that has touched our family too many times now.

Format: PaperbackAmazon Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
This is an excellent book for anyone who loves, lives with or works to support someone with Alzheimer's or dementia. It is detailed and comprehensive enough to be a text book, but it is human, real and approachable enough for family members to read and learn from. We learn about the conditions and their biology, then it gets more human - and that's where the real gold dust is. It is so important to understand what life is like for the person affected - and this book does a wonderful job to get this message across in detail. It is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction with a lot of good information for relatives/carersReviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 May 2018
Format: PaperbackAmazon Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
This is an easily accessible but in-depth informative book about AD and dementia and the subtitle to the book "What Everyone Needs to Know" really says it all.
We start off with an explanation to dementia as AD and other diseases can cause it and the rest of the 7 chapters deal with Alzheimer.
The definitions, explanations of symptoms and tests etc. are all explained very clearly, but what is really great about the book is how it consistently takes both patient and carers/family into consideration all the time. Dr Sabat understands the suffering on both sides and tries to demystify as much as possible and to help make life easier for both patient and relatives/friends/carers.
This is a great book whether people want to read through it in a professional manner or if it is for somebody personally affected by Alzheimer's on the caring or patient side.
