Japanese cell biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for discovering how cells recycle themselves through a process called autophagy 😊Autophagy, which means “self-eating,” is the body’s way of cleaning out damaged parts of cells and reusing them for energy, especially when food is scarce. When the body doesn’t receive enough nutrients, cells break down and recycle their own worn-out components to survive.Ohsumi identified the key genes that control this process by studying yeast cells, and his work helped scientists understand how autophagy affects diseases like cancer, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s.His discovery changed how researchers view cell survival and health, proving that even at a microscopic level, the body has its own built-in recycling system.

So, I see a lot of comments regarding intermittent fasting or Ramadan. Deep cell autophagy doesn’t kick in until 48-72 hours of fasting.

When I fasted for 36hours, the mind changed completely, I got more active than feeling weak. Unless you are not starving, you do not need food 3 times. Now I just have coffee in the morning and breakfast has shifted to lunch time and dinner after 4 hours. Life does change with it, more clarity in the brain.
Ps. Keep consuming mineral water.

Well, that might explain how my Crohns Disease went into remission. Back in 1992, only tree huggers went to health farms but I was desperate. I was in pain & the drugs weren’t working. I told my specialist that I was going to try fasting at a Health Farm. He laughed at me.
By the end of 6 weeks of fasting they had weened me off all drugs & my Crohns went into remission (for about 7 years).
I excitedly told my Specialist & he said… “That’s ridiculous. There is no correlation. It was just spontaneous remission.”
Fast forward to 2012 & I asked my new Specialist if there was any new treatment for Crohn’s disease. He replied… Yes, we fast patients in hospital with an IV drip.

Justin Kase note that working out, such as weight training, to tear the muscles leads to the repair response and prevents your body using proteins for food in the vacuum. My dr and fitness coach both recommended high water intake, weights, and 72 hrs fasting once a week and the results were great

Justin Kase Maybe if you are like 4% body fat. If your body has a ton of stored fat like most of us, your body will burn the fat, long before it touches the lean tissue. For first timers in fasting, first you have to prepare your body to be condition in starving. In the Philippines, they conduct seminars to be guided in a rightful way of fasting and achieve good results. In fasting, the water use in drinking must be a non acidic and free from chlorine. We do not go fasting at once, we went through cleansing diet first, where only fresh fruits are taken such as oranges, apples, pears, grapes, mangos, papaya, banana, watermelon, cantaloupe etc., and fresh fruit juices not in a can or in bottle (for these can and bottled juices are acidic). That is called, cleansing diet, this is what we do before going into fasting.

If you want to reset your entire body and immune system, and stop any blood-related diseases or recovery from damage cells, you must practice fasting. That is how the body heals itself—by consuming its own damaged cells.
This has always been a part of Sanatan Dharma; the Hindu way of life includes the practice of fasting. Nowadays, it is called "intermittent fasting" or given other English names.
Unfortunately, we Indians often fail to read, appreciate, or take pride in our own history, nor do we try to explore it deeply. Thousands of years ago, our ancestors made remarkable discoveries and inventions—such as the telescope, the concept of lightning, knowledge of galaxies, the number zero, advances in science, iron, gold, light, cotton, wool, timekeeping, surgical procedures, vaccines, and even flying aircraft—among many others. However, we failed to preserve this knowledge. Others read from our stolen texts, reinvented these ideas, and took credit for them—while we clapped for them. We should appreciate whoever created something, but let’s not forget who truly created it: the masters.

What needs to be accepted and normalized is that it is okay to be hungry. Being full and feeling full all the time is not healthy but somehow our society has normalized this. Eating to over saturation with huge calories counts per meal and portion sizes that are 2-3 meals in one has become the norm. We need to retrain our brains and our body to not need to be full.

This is why i only eat 1 meal a day.. Since i was a kid, i couldn’t FORCE myself to have something if i wasn’t hungry.. My parents would worry and ask me why i never ate lunch or breakfast.. And i could never explain it, but now I’m older, i’ve found since i cut down on consuming, i haven’t necessarily lost weight or become underdeveloped, instead my body actually feels a lot stronger, a strict 1 protein-based meal a day paired with regular exercise, means i only really get “sick” once every couple years.. And even then i can fight it off within a day or two.. I like to think all the time my body is empty, the only thing it can break down and target is bad stuff, i also understand why a lot of people fast and go on strict diets for long amounts of time.. You are what you eat, if you eat shit, you become shit.

We did not evolve eating three meals per day morning, noon and night for many many generations. Breakfast was not the most important meal of the day.
Hunting and gathering, but eating when there was something to eat and going without the rest of the time, but still being able to function
Those that could not function; and gather didn’t stay around long.
Today we call it fasting, culturally normalized, habituated to eat as scheduled before all going to the fields, or all going to the factory?
Our bodies are quite capable of functioning having skipped a few meals. Humankind has been doing this for a long time up until the past few…

On 2009 the Scientist from USC did an study about fasting and the anti aging effects. On the study he applied chemotherapy to the lab rats, the difference was. He allowed one to eat before the chemo and the other fast with water only. He found the one on fasting very energetic without side effects vs the other. The conclusion was, the body during fasting is on “repair & clean mode” instead processing food. The immune systems is on High Level, clean the body and protects the good cells from the chemo but not the case on the cancer cells. On that time my wife had cancer and i contacted the scientist and i followed his protocol. Protocol 48-62hrs fasting only water before chemo and 24hrs after. This was on 2009, my wife is cancer free. I used to do the fasting at the same time with her. The first time 52hrs fasting with only water. Was tough the first time, isn’t for everybody. During that time the body heals and clean, i noticed on the texture of the skin, great sleep, reduction on blood pressure, and you go to the toilet daily like any other day. Was a surprise for me to see this news, because this study was done before.

What’s True
What’s Oversimplified
He did win the Nobel Prize for discovering how autophagy works.
Autophagy increases when nutrients are scarce.
But the viral wording makes it sound more dramatic than the biology actually is.
Fact check by chat gbt: The post is mostly accurate, but simplified.
The scientist shown is Yoshinori Ohsumi, who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries of the mechanisms of autophagy.
• Ohsumi identified key genes that control autophagy by studying yeast.
• Autophagy is a process where cells break down and recycle damaged components.
• His work greatly advanced understanding of diseases like cancer, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s.
• Cells increase autophagy during nutrient starvation.
The claim that “the body eats its own damaged cells when it doesn’t receive food” is not quite precise.
Autophagy:
• Happens all the time, not only during starvation.
• Primarily recycles damaged proteins and organelles inside individual cells, not whole cells.
• Is more like a cellular recycling and cleanup system than the body “eating itself.”
It is different from:
• Apoptosis (programmed cell death)
• The body consuming whole cells as a survival strategy
