What is Support at Home?

Home Care Nurse from Southern Cross Care providing nursing services to a female home care client in home 640x480

Support at Home provides Australian Government funding for eligible older people. People who need support to live independently at home are assessed and then approved for services including clinical care, independence supports and everyday living supports.

Support at Home replaces the Home Care Packages program and Short Term Restorative Care programme. In 2027, the Commonwealth Home Support Programme will also become part of Support at Home.

What services are available under Support at Home?

The services available under Support at Home are similar to what was previously available under the Home Care Packages and Short Term Restorative Care programs.

What will I pay for Support at Home services?

The Australian Government has set a new scale of contributions clients pay towards services under Support at Home. Your contribution will be a percentage of the price of the relevant service.

Some clients who were already receiving a Home Care Package before 12 September 2024 will not be required to pay any contributions, while others will pay a reduced contribution rate, because they have the benefit of the government’s ‘no worse off principle’ in relation to contributions by existing care recipients. New care recipients may be required to pay more towards services.

How costs are shared

The Government covers a different percentage depending on the category of service:

Service TypeExamplesGovernment Funding
Clinical CareNursing, allied health, nutrition, care management100% covered
IndependencePersonal care, social support, respite, transport, home modskAt least 50% covered
Everyday LivingCleaning, gardening, meals, home maintenanceAt least 20% covered

Funding classifications explained

Support at Home has 8 funding levels or classifications (instead of the 4 levels in the old Home Care Package system). The classification sets the amount of funding available for your services.

There are also short-term care options, including:

  • 12 week support through the Restorative Care or End-of-Life Pathways
  • Assistive technology and home modifications funding, split into three levels: low, medium and high.
