  • C (Communication & Coping -

  • E (Education & Empowerment -

This is a how-to book for paid caregivers as well as for family members and friends, who sometimes need to give themselves a break and rest from caregiving. Tami takes the pressure off us, and goes through steps for us to take for our own mental and physical health, as well as that of our loved ones. I have purchased several copies of this book and gifted them to friends who are facing challenges with loved ones with cognitive decline.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Anyone Supporting a Loved One with Diagnosed or Suspected Dementia

I had the benefit of attending one of Tami's support groups a few months ago and it changed my life. I have been going through this journey since my mother was diagnosed with dementia almost two years ago. Yet I have received little in the way of information and support from health care professionals and social workers.

Tami demystifies the disease in this book with practical tips for how to survive and thrive as a caregiver. She does this with real life examples of how caregivers handled challenges with a loved one suffering from dementia. I particularly liked the action plans at the end of each section that offer common sense advice for addressing needs.

After reading the book, I had a revelation that my father, who was diagnosed with a neuron motor disease many years ago and is in skilled nursing care, is also likely dealing with dementia. I plan to discuss my concerns with his care providers.

In this book it talked about how dementia is going to affect our loved ones and it equipped me with how to respond to my Dad's behaviors and questions, such as how to handle him asking the same questions over and over again, wandering, not knowing who I am, etc. I also loved the logs that are in the book and found journaling to be so helpful. Logs/journaling really came in handy to answer questions from his doctor, too.

This is a book that you can read all the way through, and then when your loved one does something new, you can return to a specific section to recap. A must have book when you're on this journey!
