Review
"The Caregiver's Guide to Dementia is a must-read for family caregivers dealing with the many forms of dementia and brain failure. Filled with practical information, action steps, resources, and encouragement, Gail's compassionate and expert knowledge is evident on every page. I highly recommend this book for families to use as a trusted reference that offers guidance, support, and, most of all, hope."--Michelle Podlesni, president of the National Nurses in Business Association

"The Caregiver's Guide to Dementia presents readers with a wealth of valuable information that is organized for easy accessibility. An indispensable tool for both new and seasoned caregivers, it will become a classic."--Carol Bradley Bursack, journalist in elder care issues, author of Minding Our Elders: Caregivers Share Their Personal Stories

"This book is a necessity for anyone new to or dealing with dementia. It is filled with sound information, shares great examples, gives the reader questions to ask, guides them on things to say and do, and helps those who care for others learn to pause in order to evaluate their own health and life balance."--Lori La Bey, founder of Alzheimer's Speaks (www.AlzheimersSpeaks.com)

"As a neurologist and caregiver for my father who had Alzheimer's, I wish my mother and I had had access to a resource as practical and helpful as The Caregiver's Guide. What sets the book apart is its consistent attention to caregiver health and well-being, imploring them to stop and check in with themselves, making use of mindfulness and other techniques of centering in the present moment. Gail's rich experience, knowledge, and compassion come through on every page. This book gets my highest recommendation."--Daniel C. Potts, MD, FAAN, neurologist, author, advocate

"Gail draws on her decades of experience to give dementia caregivers exactly what they need on this journey. The depth of her love and care comes across on every page, and it is so clear that she GETS IT. The lists of what to do or say, and what to ask the doctor, take this book to the next level as a resource caregivers can actually USE in their day-to-day experience. I recommend this book to all caregivers."--Lisa K. Baker, Ph.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist & Dementia Coach

Gail Weatherill RN CAEd

Gail Weatherill is a Registered Nurse and board-certified Alzheimer's Educator. Her career has spanned four decades and many settings. From an intensive care head nurse in Saudi Arabia to the Director of Nursing in a Virginia nursing home, Gail has done it all.

For the last twenty years, Gail has focused on the care of people living with dementia and the education of their caregivers. She practices as her professional alter ego, The Dementia Nurse. Her ability to hear hearts instead of brains gives Gail a unique understanding of those with dementia and the people who love them.

Gail became a family caregiver herself when a beloved client with no family moved in with her and her family for her last few years of life. She understands the demands of 24/7 care of a loved one with dementia. She now works to compensate for our health "care" system's failure to support caregivers in meeting those demands.

Gail's irreverent approach to the American health care machine makes her an effective and sought out advocate for those in deepest need. She has participated in the Nurses Take DC movement for safe staffing ratios in our hospitals and long term care facilities.

Through her writing, speaking, and coaching, Gail lives to educate dementia caregivers "one heart at a time". She maintains a closed caregiver support group on Facebook, a group that has grown to 50,000 members from over 100 countries. The need is global and great. As Gail enters her fortieth year of nursing practice, she will tell you she is just getting started. You can keep up with her at https://thedementianurse.com.

When she's not busy rabble-rousing for health care causes, Gail can be found reading, sewing fidget quilts, and missing her two daughters whom she says live entirely too far from their mother. She shares her home in Charlottesville, VA with a cat named Baby Silas who lets her use the laptop when he's not busy warming his belly on it.

Just what I needed!!!! My grandmother was just diagnosed with vascular dementia, and I was at a loss as what to do. This book is very well written, easy read, yet packed with How To's and suggestions not only as to what to do but also what to say and not say. It's also very real, the author is very honest and realistic as to what can happen, everything I read was just what was happening, and the suggestions really work. Another thing that was really useful was the definitions at the begging of the book really helped me understand what dementia is and what it is not. I recommend this book to anyone who has no idea what to do when facing this new stage of their loved one's life. Dementia is really frustrating and confusing for all involved, this book helps deal with that and help the caregivers process their emotions and gain a positive perspective and avoid mistakes.

If you buy just one book to guide you through the world of dementia caregiving, this is the one! Written in a warm and friendly style, it’s packed with practical information for whatever stage your loved one with dementia might be in, and for whatever you, as the caregiver, might be thinking and feeling. The author speaks from her years of experience using real-life examples to help with understanding the many aspects that will inevitably be encountered such as behavioral issues, daily living concerns, legal and financial needs, and end-of-life care. While all of that is incredibly informative and offers excellent guidance, her support for the caregiver’s needs is worth the price alone! She offers humor, empathy, compassion and understanding throughout.

This is a good book to read whether your family has alz/deme, you’re a memory care employee, or you just want to learn more about brain failure. (A term used in the book, which I find perfectly describes the effects dementia has on the brain.)

Wonderful book , I haven't been able to sit down and really read it yet but the little that I have read is written well and interesting. They included a second book free about being a caretaker . This book was about a couple who were forced to deal with the wife developing MS, leading to her complete disability and eventual death. It was an a disturbing reality as , though the vendor had no way of knowing of course, I am dealing with my own MS. It was rather disconcerting to read her devastating course of her disease. The disease symptoms I have are quite different from the authors wife but it was a bit scary to read .
The book about dementia I think will be helpful and I am glad I ordered it. The order came quickly , was packaged well and would be a great addition to anyone's collection that is dealing with this horrible disease in their family. I must say it was a nice thing for the seller to add the second book as a gift , I know it would be very helpful for others to receive.

It cover the whole gamut from guilt to finances to meds to therapists/doctors, etc. Lots of resources in the back and tips to keep your own sanity and when it may be time to move to a care facility. Reviewed in the United States on 23 March 2020

For 3 years I've been caring for my spouse, who has dementia. Turns out I've been doing most things wrong, which explains why it's so frustrating and draining. This author has been there and come through, again and again, and i am learning from her at a rapid rate. "You'll never win an argument with someone who has dementia," she points out. So simple, and so true! How much time have I wasted trying to persuade my spouse to see it my way. "Therapeutic lying" is okay; you are not manipulative, just practical. Trust your care team, or get help you can trust. It never occurred to me that I needed a care team ... but I do. This is not airy-fairy, feel-good-about-yourself self help, but practical information to put to use right now, this minute, complete with resource listings. Reading it, I've cried silent tears and sobbed with relief, and laughed out loud, and found new confidence that I can do this, I will do this. At whatever stage your loved one with dementia may be (or wherever you yourself may be), this book will become a daily dose of "get 'er done," and I'm grateful.
